STEM DAY with STEMBEEZ

(MLK Day of Service)

I am currently on the board for a non-profit organization  known as STEM BEEZ. The goal of the organization is to expose the younger generation of minorities and those in lower income areas to the STEM field, as well as provide free healthcare screenings and education. STEM and healthcare are not readily accessible or affordable in these areas and we would like to provide a day where they have access to them without the worry or restriction of finances. The STEM DAY event is co-sponsored with the South Campus Science and Wellness department and is done in honor of the MLK Day of Service.

STEM professors from all the campuses are given an opportunity to create a table that provides a hands-on activity for students to take part in on a subject of their choice. Last year, Professor Lidia Berbeci had a chemistry table; Professor Jacqueline Conrad had an anatomy and physiology table where the participants had to assemble a skeleton; Professor Janne Nielsen had a strawberry DNA extraction table; Professor Henri Liauw A Pau had a display of fossils; and the Science Club had  a table with several hands-on activities.

Our first event, held 1/19/19, was a success as we serviced 217 students and their parents that weekend.  In January 2020, we serviced 250+ students and their parents.
